Capturing and preserving my children’s milestones and achievements is an absolute non-negotiable. It has to be done. The care and love for family videography was a lasting impression my father set upon me. He had one of those VHS camcorders and captured everything from my stage performing antics to flower-picking soccer games. But wow, that camcorder was painfully large. Thankfully video-capturing devices have shrunk down tremendously since the briefcase-size days.
Cameras have also advanced ten-fold in terms of technology and quality. At minimum, I only shoot video of my kids in 1080p high-definition. My current setup involves hauling around either my Canon DSLR and tripod or my Panasonic fixed-lens. Video is spectacular on the DSLR, but mobility is an absolute drag. I can get better action shots with my compact Panasonic, but it is extremely delicate and temperamental. Both of my cameras are getting in the way of enjoying the moment.
The shortcomings of my current camera companions have lead to shopping around for a more capable solution. I’ve had my eye on GoPro for quite some time. Experimental slow-motion captures, bold action shots and other GoPro adventures are becoming ubiquitous treasures on YouTube. Image quality is spectacular, but perhaps the greatest selling point (for this dad at least), is GoPro’s mobility and durability. GoPro cameras are equip-able using a plethora of devices, from water-resistant cases to body-worn mounting hardware. These cameras are also exceptionally durable. Kids can use GoPro cameras without concerned mom or dad chasing them down.
